Scope:
Specular Gloss is a measure of the light reflected by the surface of a material. Gloss can be inherent in the material, a result of the molding process, or a result of surface texture. Gloss can also be affected by environmental factors such as weathering or surface abrasion. Thus Gloss can be useful in product development, process development, and end use performance testing.
Test Procedure:
Gloss measurements are always referenced against a standard, and the angle of reflection (20°, 60°, or 85°) must be specified. The Glossmeter is set to the proper angle, calibrated, then checked with the standard supplied with the meter. The meter is then placed on the test sample and a reading is taken.
Specimen size:
Any flat surface larger than the base of the Glossmeter - 45 x 145mm (1.75" x 5.625") minimum.
Data:
20° Gloss (%)
60° Gloss (%)
85° Gloss (%)
Equipment Used:
BYK Gardner micro TRI Glossmeter
